I run a $20 cone type gause filter directly on the AMM with a bracket I made to hold the amm & filter up
in hot weather shut down & restart situations or sitting idling than take off yes its gona get a gulp of hot air I mounted my AMM & filter high & as far to the left as possible this not only keeps the filter aou of the path of direct airflow through the IC but also when moving the air that comes between the hood & headlight door blows any heat rearward I think also having the big 10 inch fan on the IC moves air around in there a bit keeping it cooler idling too one could also FAB a heat shield from aluminum diamond plate or stainless that would look great & keep some of the engines heat from the filter element if concerned
Id say the easiest thing to do is what I did & if you are woried about AMM life on hot starts in the summer pop the hood when you run into the store & close it when you restart I rarely do this & havent blown an AMM yet in 3 years
I would also say though that the best possible option is to run a FMIC & stick the open filter where the IC used to be or to move the charcoal canister where the old air filter used to be & cut a hole in the inner fender & mount the filter between the inner & outer fender
but the drop in K&N is definatly the least efective I havent taken flow readings but Im sure the drop in is a small improvment over paper considering the box & plumming also what ever gain in cold air from the stock box is lost by it blocking airflow through the IC
the other advantage along with performance is the cool sound of turbo spooling up & bypass valve on shifting:-)
definatly go with the open element filter
