Mr. Bob Lutz, read my lips:
NO ONE in Europe except for a tiny, tiny fringe that has a weak spot for Americana AND no regard for depreciation, prestige or running costs, wants a Caddy, no matter how good you (or the press) say they are, no matter how much money you pump in making Cadillac halfway competitive at Le Mans and no matter who you are going to select to distribute them. There is just no captive audience for Caddies. For all we knmow, they are big and brash and pink, have nowhere near the refinement and quality that we are used to at the rarified end of the market and oh, Elvis liked them a lot so they must be the epitome of bad taste. Against the likes of Mercedes, BMW, Audi, Jaguar and Volvo it's a losing proposition. So why the heck are you intent of investing even more money trying to change our minds, and at the same time starve the one premium make you have that -does- have a good image of development money?
Time to face the music, GM. Where Ford, D-C and Volkswagen have scooped up almost every meaningful prestige badge under the sun, you have only two and one isn't going anywhere in Europe. As for the other, you surely must be aware that it finds itself in a market with competitiors that have very well-engineered products in every segment of the premium and luxury market. So how the heck do you think you are going to win any new friends here against the X5 et al with a rebadged, crude Yank truck? And how do you think it will leave the credibility of the brand intact?
Sheesh...
