Shaun, I wish I had some good answers for you, especially after all the pain you've already had with this engine.

My SAAB service manual says:
Stage I: 44.5 ft/lbs
Stage II: 67 ft/lbs
Stage III: Run engine to operating temperature and then allow it to cool for 30 minites.
Stage IV: Slacken and retighten each bolt to 59 ft/lbs
Stage V: Tighten through a further 90 degrees

I have never used these specs as all the stock headgaskets used now, do not require the rnunning of the engine up to operating temperature and then going through the retighening sequence. My service manuals are old and only cover up through MY '87.

My Bentley and the instuctions that came with an elring headset that I have on hand use the same specs:

Stage I: 44 ft/lbs
Stage II: 59 ft/lbs
Stage III: plus an additional 90 degrees (1/4 turn)

These are the specs that I have always used for replacement of a stock headgasket.


Now for the kicker, if you are still using the copper gasket, which I am sure you are, since you mentioned o-ringing the block in an earlier post, I'd be wary of using either of these specs. So, hopefully Dave@SPG9 will give you some correct info.

If you find out the correct info before someone posts it, I'd appresiate you posting it or emailing it to me. I also have a studded o-ringed block using a copper gasket and I am sure that one day I'll have it a part.
