I recently noticed on a trip to Toronto on regular (89 octane) that at full boost on a '00 9-3S, the boost gauge beedlegoes up to the gap between the orange and the red anywhere from 2000 to somewhere over 5000 rpm WOT. On the way back I filled up at Sunoco on ultra premium (94 octane), but the needle didn't change where it went even after several WOT exercises.

So at ambient temperature of zero celcius, the 9-3S isn't knock limited on regular or I would have gotten more boost on the 94 octane juice. Any idea if this changes at more summer like temperatures ? What boost level does the orange/red transition correspond to on a '00 T7 car ? What boost pressure would people expect this engine to start knocking at ?

One of the big benefits of water injection not discussed earlier is that it allows lower octane gas to be used while inhibiting knocking. The difference between a tank of regular and premium here in London Ontario is 7 bucks a tank. So water injection makes a lot of sense even with a stock T7 box (disregard the cost of an Aquamist system for the moment !). But if there is no knocking, then there is no point.
