20th Anniv. GTI; specs are very similar to '90 SPG. Of course, that doesn't tell the whole story, but here are a couple numbers...

SPG, 1990:
___________________

2.0 liter turbocharged 4 cyl.
4 valve head
175 hp
195 ft/lb tq @ 3k rpm

2945 lbs

(see http://www.saabnet.com/tsn/models/1990/pr8.html)

New GTI (4 cyl.):
________________________
1.8 L 4 cylinder, in-line, 5V, turbocharged
180 hp
173 lbs-ft torque (@ ~2k rpm)

2932 lbs

...lots of other specs are quite close.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Can get more power out of c900 more easily: run hi-octane gas, tweak APC pots (free), tweak vac adv/ret capsule to run 20* advance (free), add 3 bar fpr from an n/a car (20 bucks used, tops), set base boost on high side of stock (free) - 7 psi works nice. Also run a custom alignment to 'fix' saab's lame specs @ front end, then run sticky rubber (not free, but well worth it) on some 16" rims--just so happens that aeros are same dimensions as VW's: 16x6.5.
I think you'd be closer to your friend's car than you think. My guess is the big differences are in the gearing, & the torque curve (1k rpm earlier than saab & likely doesn't taper until much later).
Last, GTI is heavy & slow vs. competitors like WRX, RSX-S, etc. 0-60 is 7.5, slow by today's standards (one site says Car & Driver got an RSX-S to 60 in 6.3.
