the pic below is of a saab 900 gearbox; the motor bolts directly on top of it (the top of the gearbox serves as the oil pan). power is delivered to the 'box via the clutch shaft, which mates to the 'box at the hole at the top of the elliptical piece (primary chain cover) of the gearbox, which in turn spins the gears. the flywheel/clutch are situated between the engine and primary chain cover with about 6-inches between the motor's endplate and the chain cover.
what i'm getting at is this: the saab gearbox doesn't have a bell-housing, so you'd have to modify the motor to accept a rwd gearbox & fabricate an oilpan.
the motor is installed with the flywheel/clutch up front, not back by the firewall. the 45* slant points to the passenger side (U.S.) of the car (when viewed from within the car). thus, if you flipped it around for rwd, the slant would point in the other direction. something to consider...
skip barber racing used to use saab motors in their open wheel rwd school cars. i've also seen one other rwd conversion on the web (open wheel, too) with a saab motor.
hope this helps...
