There no such thing as fuel spikes. When the pressure exceeds 1.1 BAR the ECU does a fuel cut. In cold weather there will be pressure overshoots that will cause fuel cuts if the MBC is set too high. Exact behaviour depends on connection details. But there is no perfect solution.
With a T5 ECU, 1995 --> 1999 you can increase the boost with a MBC. The boost will be the same in all gears. For 1st gear you will have to baby or granny the throttle to avoid wheel spin. You will need to learn some new throttle techniques.
Using a MBC should be accompanied by intake and exhaust mods to lower restriction.
remove the turbo compressor discharge silencer
install a K&N 33-2663 filter
3" duct mod for the air box
TBTC modification
Sports exhaust
And for best results, a Viggen IC.
One should never boost up an engine of questionable mechanical condition. Use M1 0W40, NGK BPCR6ES11's gapped to .035", Purolator PureOne 10251 (please check), high octane pump gas, keep the injectors clean. Make sure that the low oil pressure sending switch is working. Odds are that it has failed by now on a 1995.
