Tying in subframes has been done for many years, beginning with the pony car Mustangs and Camaros. The idea is to reduce pan flex under heavy load particularly when you have alot of hook-up from the read end. Engine in front twists relative to the direction of crank, and transfers this force through the drive shaft where it then flexes the rear suspension components. In drag racing this flex is detrimental to launching and proper contact with the road surface because of weight transfer. Mustangs also received the "Export bar" upfront to tie the shock towers and reduce side-to-side flex.

In a front-drive car, particularly a coupe, you don't have the same physics working against you. In a coupe, I would look at tightening up side to side suspension travel with adjustable trailing arms before looking at subframe connectors. The 900 convertibles would see more benefit from subframe strength, which is what is planned for mine shortly.

As for material, there are 2 acceptable choices: 1020 DOM steel tube. Why tube? Tube is stronger than square profiles. Period. How many square drive shafts have you ever seen? As a second, but less suitable choice, .095 DOM tube; thinner wall, but likely will do the job. (DOM=Drawn Over Mandrel)

Add a good book to your library: Anything written by Carroll Smith, including Race To Win, Design to Win, Prepare to Win and Nuts, Bolts and Fasteners. If Nuts, Bolts and Fasteners doesn't scare you to death, read it until it does, or get someone who can explain the facts of physics to you. Anything you can do will be infinitely improved by reading these books and heeding Carroll's advice.

Lastly, ask why these braces weren't included on the car in the first place. Flex is included in the design for a very good reason; if it doesn't bend, it will eventually fatigue and break, which is not the result you are going for.
