Heya,

I'm dropping my car off tonight to have the headgasket replaced in my 1990 SPG. When I get it back, I want to have this little problem solved... (which may/probably caused the leaky headgasket)

When I had my new Mitsubishi TE-05 big 16g turbo installed, the wastegate was set entirely way too low, like 2 PSI base boost. It had the max boost of around 19-20 PSI, but the entire time it felt like the wastegate was leaking. Very slow spoolup, etc. The boost didn't feel like it was coming on like a c900T usually feels like. It felt very linear, like it was just coming in very slowly. I knew there was a problem because the less efficent Garrett T3-60 I had on the car just weeks before had the big kick and pulled the whole way, this 'even better' turbo felt worse than stock. I then corrected the problem and upped the base boost little by little, each time it felt like the wastegate was leaking all the way up to max boost, but less each time. Finally I set it to the stock 6.5 PSI, maybe 7 PSI base boost. At this level, the boost started coming on like a c900T ususally does, fairly hard. That was a good thing to feel that initial kick again. It hit hard and pulled the whole up to redline/max boost. Quicker spool up, etc. Now my max boost is around 25-26PSI, which is way too much boost, even with an RRFPR, 30# injectors, water injection, etc.

How would I be able to make the wastegate less leaky without getting that insanely high max boost? I simply cannot turn down the wastegate below stock settings because it is opening up the whole time, there is no kick like normal.

It's like I either have two choices...
A) low base boost which gives less max boost but has a slow spoolup and doesn't feel powerful
B) stock base boost which gives ridiculously high max boost, but good spoolup like it should be giving

What can I do? Helper spring? Upgraded wastegate?

I would love to hear your input,
Thanks in advance!
Taylor
