Hi,
There are a few factors.
1. Air needs to enter freely via a high flow filter
2. Timing must be correct. I have found that if you advance by 2 deg to 18 BTDC the car become much peppier off the line but peak boost will suffer due to insufficient retard.
3. Plugs and wires need to be in good condition. By checking the condition of the plugs a lean, normal or rich condition can be diagnosed. The presentce of first or last will contribute to lag.
4. As someone mentioned the wastegate must be good. I agree. Also I have found that by installing a MBC inline with the wastegate greatly reduces lag effectively without compromising knock protection. This is true because the APC selenoid bleeds some boost as the limit is approched, this preloads the diaphram to open. By installing a valve like a MBC you are effetively aliminating the premature opening of the diaphram.
While my stategy has not been increasing the boost, I have taken advantage of the mods listed above. Contrary to most 2.0T owners I have not raised the boost at all. It still at 11PSI. Instead, I have replaced my tranny with one from a NA car, increasing the effective torque. Maybe in the future I will raise the boost but for now its a great city/occasional highway car.
Good luck
Roman
