Was it a rod that let go? I would agree not to use and after market rod with an unknown life expectancy! We feel that a properly prepared set of stock 2nd design 16 valve rods are more than adequate, Brad says he's never had a rod failure as long as new bolts were used. We played it safe with GM's stock rods by converting them to 7/16" wave lock BB Chevy ARP rod bolts. We also profiled the small ends to get them a little lighter but they don't lend themselves well for much lightening on the large ends. We did side grind Gary's rods being careful not to remove much metal after wet magnafluxing and then shot peened them before resizing and boring the small end bushings to equal center to center distances. A good after market rod is a great way to go for a much lighter reciprocating and especially rotating mass but of course it takes a high dollar rod in a 4 cylinder that makes the H.P's of a V-8. The Crower 300M material like we used in Jordan's and Damien's is good for 400 plus H.P. however 4340 would be OK for up to 400 H.P. We found a reasonable priced Crower Sportsman rod that would be good for a 300 or so H.P. 4 cylinder application but an '85 - early '86 crankshaft has to be used with the .5mm narrower rod journals as well as a custom piston to accommodate a longer rod.
