Jeff is on the money.
The T7 regulates the turbo to get a target air mass flow. The T5 regulates the turbo to get a target boost pressure.
The T5 can be MBC'd. But a T5 will give you hot air in the summer and cold air in the winter, and the performance is highly dependant on the weather.
The T7 has less boost lag, and yes a SMBC can inprove things a bit. The T7 will close the motorized TB a bit to reduce the air mass flow if it determines that the target value is been exceeded. A MBC will cause the air mass flows to exceed the targets in the lower gears and the MTB will not be able to trim this without going outside of normal operating (MAP) parameters. So you get a CEL as the drop of a hat. And if the hose to the BPV is off, it will leak boost and the ECU sees that problems and will CEL for that too. So the T7 elimiates many of the shortcommings of the T5, but the downside is that you can't make it very powerful with a MBC like you can on the T5.
ckpaden is way of the norm. You can use a MBC on a T5 and get great safe results! But ckpaden is always after 22 PSI of boost or more. So thats an different story. And his knocking is because he pushes the system into extreme where AF ratios cannot be taken for granted. So as I said, a different situation all together. He needs a intact APC function to save him from destruction as he explores the extremes of tuning the T5. Is he having fun? You can bet on that! We would all do well to have his understanding of these things.
