At least that is a possible reason. they said the same about engine oil for many years, until Saab suddenly appeared on the label.
I've been using AMSOIL synthetic ATF in my Saabs since it came on the market, almost 20 years ago. Right now I have it in my 85 900Turbo, my 88 9000Turbo, my daughter's 1996 900SEturbo Nary a problem yet.
My rule of thumb, which seems to have worked out rather well over the past years is to change rear wheel drive automatics at 25,000 or 2 years, front wheel drive at 15,000 or 1 year. (At least as much as comes out when you pull the plug). When going to synthetic, either do a complete flush, or 3 to 4 drain, run to mix, and repeat operations.
After that, AMSOIL ATF is good for 50,000 miles or so before changing what comes out when you pull the plug.
