I'm tackling that same thing tomorrow in my 1997 900. At Lowe's hardware I found an 1/8" barbed connecter with a female thread on the other end. It fits great into the 5/32" vacuum tubing that the car uses, so I can use a single piece of rubber hose for the whole run. The barbed piece screwed right onto one of the adaptors that was included with my VDO installation kit, which then screwed onto the gauge. I'm going to tap into the vacuum tube that runs from the intake manifold to the small black box attached to the underside of the strut brace. A local auto parts store had the 5/32" tees in stock. I've spliced into enough power wires before that I don't see any problems with tapping into the headlight switch wires. It's right there by the gauge, so it should be easy enough. As for running the tube through the firewall, that's the one thing I'll have to figure out when I get there.
