Greetings,
This is an idea / project that I have been contemplating for years. Here are few points that I think are relevant:
1. According to BB (RACK9KT) poster who converted (attempted?) a 90 2.0 to 2.3, the engine mounts are different.
Solution: To swap front subframe from 2.3
2. Although you have been wisely advised by Zeke to switch the transaxles, it is not necessary. In order to save time/money you MAY either use the 88 transaxle or a 91-92 NA transaxle.
Details: You are advised to use the later transaxle because it will be inherently newer and also more robust. However, the 88T, 91-92NA trannies do bolt up with no problems to the 2.3 engine and will be the correct size axles.
3. While again, Zeke advices/ warns about the amount of splicing, you may instead use a distributor and forgo the DI completely. The 2.3 engine is READY to receive a distributor with no mods.
Details: If you use a distributor, you *MAY* be able to use the 88 ECU, however the performance software that is available for DI cars will not be possible with this setup. On the other hand, there are other Add-ons (like MSD BTM) that will be possible, so performance may still be achieved.
Lastly, one has to consider the advantage of undertaking this project. The cost/benefits ratio is very high (that is, high cost, low benefit). The 91 9k T is IMHO the best early Saab if not the best Saab ever. The model not only came with a non TCS 2.3 200 HP engine but also with an updated AERO suspension, sports body moldings, 16" rims and a slightly redesigned rear quarter. While you may be able to transplant the engine, the additional updates will result in additional cost, therefore looking for a 91 9kt and possibly fixing it up *may* be a more fruitful endeavor.
Regards
Roman
