One of the excercises they put us through was accident avoidance and getting used to how well the brakes would stop the car.
First, if you are travelling at a high rate of speed and need to slam on the brakes to avoid a serious accident, the last thing I'd worry about is the engine and instead my well being, and perhaps that of the car if possible, so, as they told us at the VFA, pretend like you're trying to break the pedal off so the anti-locks kick in. If you haven't tested them yet, at least once early on a Sunday morning find a vacant parking lot where you can get the car up to 50-60MPH and then just stand on the brakes. I wouldn't do this repeatedly in my car, but at least once so you know what the car's limit is. As Jeremy said practice some panic stops and try to get used to punching the clutch with your other foot. I'm not sure why but this is something I do just out of habit.
