yes part of tha problem with an underhood filter in that location is what you mentioned many say that it shortens the life of the AMM too someone here actualy took temp readings with the filter in diferent places & posted pre & post turbo temps
one other thing to take into acount is that if its harder for the turbo to pull in air it brings up intake temps as well & the free filter helps with that
the heat getting sucked into the filter is more a problem with the placement of the filter not the IC I certainly dont feel that running a smaller more restrictive IC is a better option
but if you look at the pic the majority of the core flow would hit the AMM more than the filter as the core is in there at an angle & the left side of the core is close to the chrome filter element mount
some cut a hole & put the filter out where the charcoal canister lives I think also that a fair amount of air comes thru between the hood & headlamp there at speed diluting the heat
