First and foremost, a DI system is not limited by the condition of it's mechanical components. As long as crank sensor is working properly (very rarely would this fail) the system is going to provide spark. Distributors wear out all of the time.
Two, The spark is more potent from a DI system than it is from the SAAB Distributor system.
Three, A DI system is much better at controlling retard and advance. It will retard spark in the event of knock as well as it will advance spark to optimum levels for different conditions.
Overall, you end up with a system that is more reliable, more accurate and more powerful. It should produce a smoother running engine with less knock. And you never have to worry about adjusting timing again.
