When you increase the diameter of the compressor/intake on a stock TDO4, you do nothing more than create a lot of heat. It might make a touch more power, but you will also dramatically increase EGT's and big-time reduce the service life of the turbo. It's like Dave New said, you have to increase the exhaust housing or you won't safely make any more power. It would be like running a 26k marathon while being limited to breathing through one of those tiny little red coffee stirring/drinking straws. Quick exhaustion. They(Abbott)are cute with the wording of the ad:
"360-degree Thrust-face bearing for improved reliability and fast compressor spool-up"
Well, I was under the impression that all TDO4's came with a factory installed 360 degree thrust bearing anyway. The problem is that they are all brass, and that won't last under a lot of heat, especially not after being modded to produce even more heat. The problem is that no one makes a steel thrust bearing upgrade for these yet. My turbo guy is working on this now. He tells me that 99% of these particular Mitsu's die due to premature thrust bearing wear. I was originally gonna go this route, but I'm glad now that I didn't. I'm gonna go with a 19T instead. If you absolutely have to build up your stock 6cm2 housing, my local turbo freak will do it here for less than a 1/4 of what Abbott will charge. He is without a doubt one of the Best turbo builders in the world. Let me know if any of you want his #. :O)
