What a relief! This brings me back to the original combo I had before having a 1989-90 re-enforced gearbox installed by Scanwest this last spring. My combo before had been the original 1988 gearbox with the primaries changed from .84 to .78 which made for useful gearing.

With the new gearbox(and its stock overall ratios) and then a new Quartermaster clutch, my car was very zippy. The load on the engine was alot less though which did not match as well with my current T3/T4 turbo. With the taller gearing again, engine load is increased and my turbo is quicker to respond, producing alot more torque across the RPM range. The car is so much more comfortable to drive. Fewer gear changes, less buzziness, and quiet cruising in 5th gear on the highway.

If you have a 1988 or older gearbox, I recommend changing to the .78 primaries or if you have a 1989 or newer, search long and hard for a .72 set from Europe, because it is worth it. There are thousands of used sets in Europe, its just a matter of finding someone who will get you a set.

Nick from Taliaferro SAAB found a set for me. Maybe he can get more if enough people show interest.
