Hi Rick, if you had both blocks torn down to just a bare block the only difference would be a couple of dowel pins in the 9000 block that aren't needed in the 900 block and a plug where the 900 turbo oil return goes. Anyway the blocks are identical but the timing cover, starter plate/rear seal housing, oil pump pick up tube/screen, front damper/pulley, distributor, exhaust & intake manifold with throttle body all have to be changed over from the '85 engine. Some other little things like the water drain housing on your '85 will have to be switched with the 9000 water pump housing that bolts where the drain housing goes on the 900. The transmissions are completely different so you'll have to use your 900 trans. The water cooled turbo from the 9000 will work with the early 900 by adding '88 up 900T cooling lines and the '88 up 900T lower radiator hose that T's off to the turbo. The 9000 turbo will have to be re-clocked to fit to 900 and you'll need to use your '85 waste gate actuator with bracket. The 9000 turbo support bracket will need to be discarded and just use the 900 one where it bolts to the turbo with the exhaust manifold. You will also have to use your 900 turbo oil supply and return hardware, just remove the plug in the 9000 block for the oil return tube with o-ring. The 9000 flywheel and 9" clutch would be way better than the old 900 8 1/2" setup but the 9000 flywheel's timing marks are 30 degrees off from the 900! You could use the 9000 30 degree mark by re-stamping it to 0 and remove the rest of the marks (then re-balance flywheel!) as with modern day timing lights only the 0 mark is absolutely necessary. This sounds like a lot of stuff to transfer but it's not as bad as it sounds and would be a good upgrade for an '85 900 to get ride of the poor flowing cylinder head, goofy intake cam, non-water cooled turbo and end up with a 9" 9000T clutch with the stronger disc hub springs. If you "go for it" we can provide you with a list of everything you'll need! Hope this helps either way! Take care, Dave
