I got red series on my '91 9kt. This consisted of intake manifold reaming, intake and exhaust porting on the head, as well as cutting back the valve stems to create an extra 2 mm of space. Although all the pics on the SD website showed a red valve cover for the "redhead" conversion, I was informed that that was not included. I talked them into it, and three months after I sent my valve cover, after calling them and e-mailing them to ask if it was done, it arrived. It looks tremendous. Powder coated red. I'm not convinced it made my car go faster, though.
The good:
Valve cover looks awesome. However, I had to get it stripped and bead-blasted myself.
The bad:
1. Took way too much time - 2 months for the cylinder head
2. I don't think cutting back the valve stems was a good idea. They cut them back so low that I was sure the cut portion was dropping down through the valve seals, so I was concerned about burning oil.
3. They didn't resurface my cylinder head, and they told me it was flat, but after I installed it and couldn't get a good seal, a machine shop put an engineer's straightedge to it and showed me that it wasn't flat. I don't have that engine anymore, anyway. It's desirable to not resurface the head if avoidable, because of compression issues, but if it isn't flat anyway, well....
My recommendations:
If you like the red valve cover, get someone else to powder coat it for you (Saab Savior?).
If you have a trusted local machine shop, get them to disassemble your head and do a modest cut-back around the ports.
I did get my exhaust manifold Jet-Coated and I like that. It really does feel cooler down there.
