The technical overview from the Saab website says that the 4-speed auto from the 9-5 was rated to withstand the torque of 310 Nm, and the newer 5-speed went up to 350 Nm. The transmission communicates the maximum allowable torque to the ECU, so theoretically this would prevent it from damaging.
Somebody mentioned, however, that the aftermarket software (BSR/Speedparts?) ignores this signal. And while the torque is still limited in the first two gears, it always puts out the full power in higher gears.
On the other hand, if you blow up your tranny, then you'll have a perfect excuse to install a manual gearbox ;)
