The pictures on our web site ( http://www.group9performance.com/saab.asp ) show our flywheel lightening procedures pretty well! The first picture is the crankshaft side where we machine the recessed part deeper (minimum thickness to clutch side 11mm) while retaining the 30 degree angle to the crank flange. You can machine this area to within 1/4" (min!) of the ring gear as long as you use a large radiused cutter. We even shot-peen the machined area to retain the original casting surface integrity. You can also remove material from the clutch side outboard of the mounting holes/ dowel pins but you would have to redo your timing marks. If you go this route do not machine the crank side as far out to the ring gear, in other words only machine to within 1/2" of the ring gear if your going to remove anything on the outer portion of the clutch side! Remember after a flywheel is lightened it's mandatory to re-balance the unit! If you email me I can send you some additional pictures and spec's. Dave
