The intake is up front and high up. This would seem to be optimal to reduce dust and sand intake. And the stock pipe seems also be optimal for avoiding hydrolocking the engine in rain floods. There have been quite a few NG900 and 9-3's with such water damage.
I am concerned about that intake too. But removal of the stock box with an open element replacement seems like a worst case for dust.
The intake pipe muffler might not be as bad as it sounds. I have not looked at in detail yet. The open end of the intake pipe looks like it could use some serious help. It needs an intake flair.
