On my 88 9000 I haqve the very larger OEM replacemenmt K&N, this bably is a foot long in the stock location. I have a cut-away version of hte stick box in the wheel well so it still keeps the filter in place but provides extra air flow. In hte winter I have completely stock configuration with the K&N in the wheel well, as I was surprised last year how much crap gets in thought the cracks--so to speak.I use to have an open element modified to feed in the bumper fairing where the tow hook is, but that got way to dirty in our rainy winters.
I do not notice any performance degredation with OEM K&N config in stock box. I little more intacke noise when I have the opened up version of moy air box.
