Control Unit", the computer that runs the engine management. The Saab Trionic ECU is perhaps the most sophisticated in the world. The ECU controls the air/fuel ratio, timing, senses engine knock and controls turbo boost. Unfortunately if you're worried about $600 for the exhaust, the ECU is that much if not more, depending on the tuner. I can tell you it is well worth the investment. I have done the exhaust, ECU and other upgrades. It is an absolute blast. I started with a lease myself, but love the car so much I've since bought the lease outright...
BTW, you can get an exhaust upgrade, however my understanding with the Trionic 7, which you undoubtedly have, will have little effect unless you do go with an ECU upgrade. My '97 has an older T5 unit and could be affected by the exhaust upgrade. Yours automatically compensates as the T7 respondes to a preset torque setting regardless of exhaust system back pressure.
