The engine I currently have in my 900 is from an '86 9k (2.0l) and according to the guy who sold it to me had ca. 200kkm (~124kmi) on it. It was suffering from HEAVY blow by, so I was forced to rebuild it with new rings (the pistons however were almost as good as new!). So having to replace the piston rings at 210kmi seems quite normal to me.
Replace the the bearings while you've got the engine appart, and parhaps the oil picup tube o-ring. Also you might want to consider honing the cylinders.
As for performance upgrades, unless you're aiming for some serious power then the engine internals don't realy need any work. A friend of mine is running low 12s in his 2,0 liter 9k on all oem internals (he hasn't even ported the head yet). On the other hand, porting the head now will not do you any harm, and only help in the long run.
Good luck, and happy SAABing.
