15W50 in theory does seem thick...but I;ve used it up here in BC in the spring, summer, fall, with no problems. Engine runs nice and smooth, no noticable turbo lag. oil operating temp still reaches (180F--a little higher in city)
It's not a bad choice for higher mile older engines. Anyway, you can't go wrong with any syntheticXW40/50. MY timing components were hardly worn after 300K km in my '88---aside from rock hard guides. Had synthetic since 1988 (Mobil, and Castrol).
At the moment I have Valvolive racing VR1 conventional in my engine, as I await new oil feed tubes for the head. the rubber o-rings are rock hard and I get some solid infrequent tapping from the lifters while hot. Something to look into in your 88 if the top end is noisy. These tubes almost fell out.....I had to tap them in with a hammer when new!
