Well, finally quit my lousy contract, and had time to install the MP steering rack clamp I have been sitting on for 3 months. Pretty easy install, but I just cut the big rubber piece, since it looked like a POS.
I have a 98 900 with downpipe, exhaust, SMBC, 17 BBS from the Aero. I have the SMBC set waaay to high, to get more boost in first and second (I also have Jeff's whole MBC+A kit in a box and will trade up to that soon). I went to the 17s in an effort to help the torque steer, and I would say that they take away at least 50% of the action.
I think the clamp takes away 49.9% of the rest of the torque steer. The part is not overly engineered, it looks pretty simple, but its worth every penny. I tried several hard launches, rode over several types of pavement, several windy roads, and the thing just tracks 100% better. I had my wife drive it for her impressions, and she could feel a difference in her non-extreme driving; however, when she went over some speed bumps, she squeeled with delight and could not stop laughing. Apparently, she used to hate how the steering wheel would get pulled out of her hands when going over speed bumps. That action is gone now too.
I also tried a few full power launches in first thru second with only my index finger on the top of the wheel, and was able to control the little bit of torque steer that was still evident. Not something I would do again, but gives a feel for how little is left.
At the end of the day, I was dissapointed in Saab. There is absolutely no excuse for the design of the original clamp, it borders on stupidity. Yea, yea, there are trade offs that I don't understand, but EVERY car mag I read about the NG900 said the torque steer would keep them out of the car.
I don't have any financial or other connection to MP Performance.
p.s. I am not sure what the other braces they have will do, but I am not going to purchase them, I am happy with the setup I have now.
