I had an oil pan heater underneath my old Karmann Ghia (the other perfect car I've been lucky enough to own). There was a metal tube of some sort that shrouded the first several inches of wire. As I recall, it got the h*ll beat out of it over the years. Maybe there's something that can be done to make wire less vulnerable - - but simply running it through a silicone or rubber hose won't make it less likely to be ripped off altogether. And here in the upper Midwest (read, Artic circle), it's a given that the bottom of the car WILL scrape on snow a few times every winter. Orienting the wire directly back from the plug might be wise, too: less snag potential.
SAS may have some suggestions. Alternatively, maybe it's skid plate time.
Good luck. Let us know if you find an elegant solution.
