I have a 2002 9-3 2.05 HOT Convertible with auto. My wife is manual challenged. At first, I did exactly what you propose (i.e., Stage 1, cat back and K&N). Nick said it wouldn't pose a problem to the tranny and my SAAB mechanic with 18 years SAAB experience concurred. It is an awesome upgrade. You will not think it's the same car. Since the upgrade I added the 3" downpipe (faster spool up) and the Abbott inlet pipe. Still no problems. Nick and my mechanic concurred. Nick does not recommend I go to the Stage 3 as that might challenge the tranny. My mechanic says the SAAB auto tranny's are very reliable and rugged. I've had no problems. I did flush the ATF at 30K miles and replaced with Mobil 1.
A word of caution, I upgraded the suspension before I did the Stage 1. I did Eibach Pro System KIC Steering Brace and poly bushings. That's too much for a college student's budget. You may want to forego the cat back for now and buy the MP Performance Steering Brace first. That gets rid of alot of the torque steer and will help you control the 40 plus new ponies you'll have.
One last comment, Nick is absolutely a straight up guy. He's talked me out of spending money a few times where most guys would ring up the order. His service is first rate and he stands behind what he sells. You won't find a better guy to do business with.
