So, ive only owned high-milage B202 saabs up to this time and thus have always fretted about the timing chain and the possibility of its failure. Well, that all just changed a few weeks ago.

So I get this great deal on a car ive always wanted, in this case a 1988 944 S. I always knew timing belts were a pain, but NOT LIKE THIS. every 30,000 miles they must be replaced, oh yes, and only check the tension with the factory $595 dollar tool (unless you're nuts....like me). and then there is a chain running between the cams since it's driven by one pulley! so you have to worry about that tensioner! i mean, the 944 is a great car and all (handling, handling, handling), but this is nuts compared to the saab.

Moral of the story: timing chains are were its at. especially for performance, because they dont suck all the money you intended on putting into performance parts away like some belt driven vehicles. and now i don't even fret about the saabs chain anymore!
