Steve, The load event is at the top of the piston. The top of a Turbo piston is very thick and strong to take the load. The load that is applied to the top of the piston is transfered to the connecting rod and the piston skirt. When an uncontrolled combustion occurs the piston can not move down quick enough to releive the pressure. This causes a shock load on the piston skirt. The stronger the piston skirt,the heavier the piston, the slower the engine reves. Everything is a balance of design.
The day the pistion broke was most likely days or weeks after the damage was done. Once the pistion is cracked is looses strength, the continued application of load will make the crack grow until it fails.
I have seen pistons for other types of cars that have fail on the top but it is not common.
Please understand that in my life I have broken a few pistons during the early part of the learning curve.
