A 9-3 with a AMM/MAF is a T7 system. You cannot use a MBC to increase boost. But you can use a SMBC to reduce (controller induced) boost delay. That might help in thin air. Octane requirements are another issue. Power in the lower gears can be inproved too.
And you can aways drop some $$$ for a stage I or II ECU re-programming. Stage III might be a bad choice given the octane limitations there.
The air intake box on 2000+ production is decent. A K&N will also help spoolup. You have to find out which K&N you need....!!
I don't know if new firmware for the ECU would have any improvements that would help with thin air. The dealer could update via the diagnostic port.
Use the right plugs and the DI should manage the detonation issues.
