I did buy the MP Performance Sub Frame Brace. The mechanic who installed it made a major change to it. He added four more bars and tied it to the subframe at six points. He did this after I drove with the stock MP brace for a couple of weeks. The difference was huge compared to the one bar, two point original design. This subframe completely eliminated the cowl shake that is so notorious on the convertibles. It also eliminated the last remnants of torque steer. I am not sure what it would do for a hard top but it is a great mod for the convertibles. Mine now has stiffness similar to the new 2004 convertibles.
My mechanic did the bearings. The bearings were easy, 30 minutes with a lift. The poly bushings came out with no effort. OEM bushings are more difficult I think.
The roll bar he wants to build would go behind and over the front seat headrests and would tie to the chassis on the floor. He says they really stiffen convertibles and Jeeps. He's built a lot of them for the serious off-road Jeep fans. The only downside to the roll bar that I see is access to the rear seats could be more difficult. I don't know how much it will stiffen the chassis, but he thinks it would stiffen it a lot.
The chassis is the weak point (after the driver of course) but it is much better than what I started with and is superior to any car I've ever owned. I am no longer tempted to trade in for a 2004 convertible.
Thanks again Dean.
