Unless you're set on having balancer shafts (which are only detrimental to performance to some extent) the advances on Saab engines are in engine management systems and the cylinder head. I had a T7 head (9-5, '00- 9-3) installed on my (rebuilt and upgraded) B202 block and retrofitted DI, Damien Shulock has a T5 head ('94-'98) although I don't know if it's on his car yet) as well as the complete Trionic 5 engine management system out of a '96 Aero. In both cases, significant advantages versus straight B202 eiginines that have merely been 'hotted up' have been the result in terms of driveability, throttle response and spread of power/torque. You simply don't need insane amounts of boost to get the power. Gas mileage is also better when incorporating later Saab engine technology in the c900. The '94- head flows vastly better than the older ones (including the 'long block' 2.1/2.3 litre heads that are a straight swap to the c900T engine), and the T7 head is better still by a quite significant amount. The T7 head also features lighter valves with thinner stems (5 versus 7 mm - the material properties of the valves were upgraded to maintain durability) and lighter valve springs to match, in order to reduce frictional losses.

The T5 and T7 heads require the same kind of modifications to the timing chain end as well as the right side engine mountings, and both require a custom or heavily modified 2.1 litre intake because of the different shape of the intake ports. As for later engine management systems - DI, DI/APC and the 1993 Trionic 5.2 can work off the same crankshaft postion sensor that is fitted to 16 valve normally aspirated c900's (you just need to swap oil pump covers), for the later Trionic systems you need to do a custom job on the 57-tooth 'hamster wheel' and inductive crank postion sensor (Damien bolted them to the outside crank pulley and adjacent to it on the engine, respectively). Ultimately, the ECU('s) will have to be reprogrammed to suit the particular engine as you've effectively built a hybrid.
