Thanks...
No welding was done to the head! For the 2.1 bore, I had to use a 2.1 gasket, which required two pieces of metal at the timing cover to close the gap (a small piece bridges some space where the timing chain passes up to the cam gears). The machine shop machined out a space for the pieces, then epoxied them in. They did this because the head had already been rebuilt & they didn't want to risk warping it. The pieces are there simply to keep oil from exiting and/or allow proper gasket seal, so strength isn't imperative.
The oil filler tube is strong but the mounting isn't bombproof; there's not a whole lot of valve cover metal for the screws to bite into, but the tube does protrude through the cover, so, no, not completely a butt joint. If I treat it almost as gently as, say, a Hall sensor connector, it should last a good long time :-)
Aftermarket will likely be in the future. May do Megasquirt's next iteration, which incorporates both fuel & timing, etc. For now, going to be running stock LH2.2 for break-in, then Volvo 2.2. Need to get a wideband O2 sensor before I push the motor; seriously considering one of those new Innovate sensors.
I got the idea for the spring perches from Brad's set-up. He's created a nice package for Saabers out of common circle track parts but I'm flat broke so I made my own using basic, "rough" parts available from any stock car supply shop. Going to a 5" spring allows for a bit more inboard room for tire, adjustability allows balancing the car, plus no need for custom length springs--dozens of 5" springs are available cheap. Not knowing where to start exactly, I'm beginning with 550#F/700#R. BTW, thanks to Brad for help on the phone on a couple occasions! Honestly, the frustration I experienced with the rear springs (also adjustable) would have been worth the cost for his set-up!
Other stuff I've done...upgraded axles/rear e-brake, 9000 calipers/rotors (nearly new and very cheap from PullAPart), stainless lines from Grp9 (cheaper than stock aftermarket!), nearly new used radiator (*much* lighter than original), and, while I'm normally not into spending $$ on appearance, I did drop $5 on an air dam from a Turbo car. :-)
