First, thank you both for showing me a great time in SC and NC!
I finally dug myself out from most of the work that piled-up while I was treking across the country and now I can post. :)
For everyone else, here's what happened: For vacation I decided to take a little drive from Houston to PA to visit my family and do some camping at a Blues Festival. I have a friend that lives in Greenville, SC so for 4th of July weekend I stopped-in to crash for a few nights. As it turned-out, the friend who I went to visit happens to live in the same house with Chris Snipes' sister. It also happened that on that weekend, Chris was putting-in his new turbo, so my friend and I went over so I could meet Chris and to check things out and maybe help with the install. Crazy? Well, we got to Chris' place and he mentioned that Jak was having a little gathering at his place up on Black Mountain. There were some problems with the oil return line on Chris' car so we were a little late, but eventually we all made our way up to Jak's place. Jak came and picked us-up at the highway exit. So there we all were, Chris, Chris' sister, my friend, and me, hanging-out and having polite conversation over a few beers at Jak's house. We also got a little peek into the ECU work that Jak's been doing. What a great time! Thank you for the hospitality!
Here's the Performance tie-in: What he is doing with the Volvo ECU is amazing and makes perfect sense. Jak's car is amazing. My 9-3 has a legitimate 230 WHP and there is absolutely no comparison between the acceleration that his car has and mine. When we got in my car after a short ride in Jak's it felt like we were almost going backwards.
I'm 28, a motorhead since I could read, an engineer, and have been an SAE member for the past 6 years. By no means am I an expert at automotive controls (I deal with industrial controls professionally), but after speaking with Jak for a few hours and looking at some of his toys, not only did I learn a lot, but I'm also throughly convinced that he's correct in both his theory and approach to making reliable and useable power in 900's --for a bunch of reasons which aren't mine to share. Reliable that is, as long as you're considerate of your transmission with that much HP, but of course a lot of that is up to the driver :).
Anyway, just wanted to put that out there. The only downer of the whole thing was that Chris' car wasn't finished during the time I was there...
Although I am planning-on a trip back for the Carolina Motorsports weekend on Oct. 9-10, Chad sent me an email and he's planning on running his 9-3 and I'll bring mine... Snipes and Jak, will you guys be there too?
