You can consistantly and reliably get a lot of HP from an E30 M3 motor, there is no question of that. The reason people dont do it is because it is considerably cheaper to throw in any newer bmw motor as almost all of the straight sixes can be fitted without to much difficulty. It does however ruin the car in my opinion as its handeling qualities will be compromised with a heavier motor and the M3 was built to be a light nimble track car that out cornere the competition.
To upgrade a US spec motor would cost you like $25,000 we are talking 4 grand just for the 2.5l crank and pistons then when you factor in the carbon fiber airbox and individual throttle bodies you can see why more people dont do this it just costs to much, you can throw in a 280hp E36 m3 motor and bounce it off the rev limiter all day long for less than half the money.

When all is said and done with my 99 a turbo e30 M3 will be my next project.

BMW's are as a group much more reliable than Saab's and they are also much eaiser to work on just thought I would throw that in to the mix.
