HCI (Hot Compacts and Imports) magazine is an all purpose tunerzine. I spent some time reading the August issue while eating ice cream tonight at a news stand. The issue features an article (see link below) on a moded and supercharged Ecotec engine implanted into an 03 Cavalier. The article opened with an overview of the GM Ecotec engine and it's use as a platform for so many Euro and GM cars, including Saab. It went on to describe that because so many have already been produced, it will be a hot item for engine rebuilds, performance tuning, finding parts and so forth. A turbocharged Ecotec has been in play for awhile, but a new supercharged kit that includes a built in "power IC" is now available. Along with exhaust, piston, connecting rod and ECU upgrading, this uniform kit is putting out considerable HP and torque. 265 HP was the average. When they initially experimented with the stock engine's potential using nitrous, 500 HP was very doable, with the connecting rods the evident weakness. The selling point for me was the description (after modification and install) of the engine performing as a standard everyday car under normal circumstances, same gas milage and so forth, but with knee buckling acceleration when called for. Now if someone can figure out how to implant one of those into a C900, (along with the durable 6 speed box I hear so much about) then I'll do back flips. That would be an awesome Frankentuning.
