With a few cracked pistons on the 2.3L engines, one has to be concerned with the induction air temperatures. Only way to deal with that is lower restrictions and IC improvements. There have been a few posts over time that water injection does not really work well with the T7 systems.
It has also been speculated that crankcase oil mist from the PCV system problems would contribute to knocking under very high loads, as well as transient leaning as one gets off throttle. I don't know if we will ever know the full story.
As for oil mist, the IC is a very effective oil collector and it should remove oil from the air flow. This would collect in the exit tank. I can see where a pool of this might get airbourne with the highest air mass flow rates. So a collection of oil might get released suddenly. That will only occur with an IC design that offers an oil trap. The 9-5 stock IC definately does not look like that can happen. So if oil is such a factor, it would seem that the oil would have to be moving direct from the crankcase through the PCV system. Over filling the crankcase would appear to be a very bad thing to do as that could strongly contribute so such things.
With my 95SET, when I got my MBC installed, during a boost trial, I had a single oil cloud event that made me wonder about that. With a B4 Passat TDI, one can drain a few ounces of oil from those ICs.
