For some reason, the timing is sticking to 14* now, so I raced the car. It's been on the road for less than a 1000 miles now, most without any boost.

I'm looking forward to getting the car further developed. Autocrossing it today for the first time confirmed that my decision to *increase* compression wasn't totally dumb. Lots of stuff needs sorting still, but the car has zero lag, and bunches of low end.

Anyway, I don't have a good understanding of EZK. I think it is somewhat reactive in operation, i.e., it advances timing until it detects knock, then manages things up to just below that point; retard is added in upon a knock event. I watched timing advance while revving but since I can't simulate load, couldn't see any retard action. It may gradually retard timing as load increases; I don't know. I might look at the later versions on the Volvo turbo cars; maybe there's a different box better suited.

As for the distributor, my '86 precedes the crank-mounted sensor cars and has a "real" (not gutless) distributor with a Hall sensor in it; you still have to set the base timing. I believe that this older version of EZK can't tell exactly what timing is; it just assumes that the base timing is correct and goes from there.

So I swapped out the stock distributor and put in a turbo distributor with a vacuum capsule on it. To allow EZK to manage advance, I needed to defeat the vac capsule's advance stuff. You can't use a simple check valve, as that holds pressure in the line and keeps timing retarded if you're boosting one second, off gas the next. I suppose a bleed valve would work here, but what I did instead was grind down and shape a washer to fit just beneath the "step" in the vac capsule arm. The washer is exactly the same thickness as the gap beneath the step. Result: no vac advance.
