Could this be due to GM influence?
Older designs had flat faced valves..Typical of Sodium filled ones.. are new designs still Sodium? or have they 'improved' them into Ni90 material. Most (all?) current valves have a small dish inna middle.. lighter perhaps? Prolly these are a rationalisation out of the GM parts Bin or from the Suppliers. Suspect that the shape change will yield little measurable improvement..prolly not likely worth the effort to tear down a good head to swap 'em out.
I have had a set of 'Tulip' valves (no, not in a Saab) these most resemble a Kitchen funnel in shape.. aiding in Gas flow hugely.. but are difficult to make (cost more :-) so are rare... but a set of those would be well worth the effort.
