I'm assuming you have a turbo saab. The prerequisite, regardless of the model, is to open up the exhaust. Not only will it reduce the back pressure, it will lower exhaust gas temperatures (EGT's). For every degree drop in the exhaust temperatures, the intake will drop as well. On some models, a 3" downpipe with a less restrictive cat' will give as much as 10 hp, as well as improved turbo spool-up. Also, all Saabs have a pretty restrictive intake system - this can be improved many different ways, depending on which model you have. Only after these two prerequisites are done, and the turbo control system is known to be in good condition, should the software side of tuning be employed. One of the best tuners/programmers I've had the pleasure to meet was Fredrik Bengston, from Maptun. He did the software for the engine I've put in this post. This engine dynoed at over 450 hp. It has a TD06-24T turbo, formerly used on an old GM Cyclone, IIRC. The fellow who owns it gave me a ride down a stretch of highway, just outside of Stockholm. My +300 hp 9000 was surprisingly fast, but this one is truly a rocket - the thrust one feels in 4th at the mid to upper rpms is phenomenal. It literally takes a handfull of seconds to go from 80 to 155 mph. Anyway, I don't think Fredrik, nor Maptun get the recognition they deserve in the US. Some tuners simply copy their stage 3 software and remove the boost limits - that's not tuning. In Sweden, especially with members of the Saab Turbo club, Maptun get their due recognition. There are some tuners, who seem to be quite popular, here in the 'states, have little or no business in Sweden. Anyway, my point is once you've done the prerequisites, then choose a tuner like Hirsch or MapTun - it's the safest way to go.
