depending on year...most US Turbos came with 84 ratio gears...these are low so at 75mph the engine's at 3750 or so...I found a set of 78 ratio gears...a 6% upping of the ratio...now my 85 Turbo cruises nicely at 75mph...at 3000rpm. In Europe, some Saabs got 72 ratios....hummmm. Anyhow...the chainwheel sets are all interchangable and going from 84s to 78s was the best single thing I've ever done to my car. 4 speed boxes got either 78 or 72s I believe. All you need are the chain wheels;
Counting teeth you get
84s...33/24...lowest ratio
78s...32/25...intermediate ratio...(now on my 85 900T)
72s...31/26...high ratio...found on mostly Euro spec non turbo cars
Others welcome to chime in here with corrections...and btw with the radiator out it's really easy to do this job...just remove front cover of primary chain drive and it's plug&play!
