I've read polished exhaust ports is all one needs to do, plus shaving off some metal around the valve guide boss inside the bowl for better air flow. I think the reasoning behind the polished surface is to keep the carbon from building up in there. Instead of clinging to the roughened surface it blows free. A slight air flow improvement overall, but the guide boss work makes sense.
