the same thing. ;)
The other side of thought is that with the larger diameter you're also decreasing your exhaust velocity and any scavenging effect you might otherwise get from that smaller diameter and faster exhaust travel. That, and during transient, non-extreme, throttle conditions slower waves/pulses may tend to hang around longer because they're not evacuated as quickly so partial throttle response and torque may suffer a little during those times.
Since switching from stock to full 3" I have noticed a slight decrease in mid-range response during slight increases in throttle attitude while cruising gently; the gas pedal is a little more like a switch now. Unless I go heavier on the throttle, the pickup is not quite as quick.
An engine is an air pump and near as I can figure from everything I've read and experienced is that, even with a turbo stuffing-up the exhaust track, throughput from an engine in particular is a hugely variable thing that is dependent upon: the preceding condition of things, body Delta T, throttle position, rpm, etc.
In opposition to that, vessels carrying fluids/gasses always operate most efficiently when their size, length, and shape is tuned to handle a certain amount of volume with a fairly reqular wavefront, certain viscosity, specified velocity, reasonably consistant reynolds#, certain Delta P, etc.---so it just depends what characteristics of the pump you're trying to emphasize and maximize and which others you're willing to sacrifice. An oversized pipe can't possibly handle low flow instances as efficiently as a smaller properly sized pipe and a smaller pipe can't possibly hope to outflow a big pipe when larger volumes are considered.
Everything is a compromise :)
What's really been bugging me is why/how tuned SRT4's I've run across at the drag strip always manage to sound like big low rumbly diesel trucks when they're only 2.3L's? Anyone else ever notice that?
