A K&N replacement element will help with turbo spoolup and it will reduce torque roll off at the high flow rates of WOT and high RPMs.
But the spoolup improvement will be lost in the controller induced boost lag. A SMBC will allow the turbo to spool up much faster and will allow the effects of a low restriction air filter to be felt. It will also allow for some increase in boost of the lower gears. But the SMBC should not be used to increase the peak boost levels as the ECU will fight that by closing the motorized throttle.
Such improvements will be more evident with a manual gear box. An automatic allows the engine to rev much higher by torque converter slippage, which gets the gas flows up much faster and the boost is much more reponsive than a manual gear box. But one can rev the engine and abuse the clutch to compensate, but many feel that that is not acceptable.
Use good oil and keep the injectors clean. Techron Concentrate every 8K or so, or 3X per year. Do not neglect the plugs and do not expect the best performance if you are not using premium fuel.
