I just got back from my first experience driving on a racetrack. I drove my 91 SPG (mods listed at end) and had an absolute blast. It is a small local roadcourse, just an open track day- maybe 10 other cars and a few bikes. I ran a slow ~1.30 time, but an aquiantance with a turbo integra runs 1.20, which is pretty respectable for a street car.

I had issues with my heat shield getting hot and melting my positive battery cable and therefore grounding out. That was a sparky situation to remedy- now I see another virtue of relocating the battery. I resolved that and took about 12 more laps before the brake pads were toast. I continue to not recommend EBC Greenstuffs. I had maybe 1/3 to 1/2 left on the pads when I began and they were completely gone after 15 laps. The Falken Azenis tires fared a little better, I used maybe 1/5 of their treadlife. They might have held up better had I known what I was doing and skidded a little less. I am happy with the handling balance of the car. It could be a little stiffer to limit body movement, but I can comfortably (well, sometimes a little unexpectedly) control cornerning attitude. More tire would go a long way, as would some new bushings, but I was pretty impressed with the handling for such a short suspension mod list and a heavy, poorly distributed car.

Overall it was thoroughly addicting. I wish I had done it sooner, as tomorrow will probably be the last day of this track as zoning ordinances force its closure. Hopefully a new one pops up around here soon, as I have a new focus in my modifications.
